Edgemont is known for its strong academics, with students frequently making the top 20% of all schools statewide in test scores. The school’s debate and Model UN programs are also highly regarded.
Despite its small size, the community feels very connected. Many residents have been urging Greenburgh to incorporate the village, so it can control planning and zoning, as well as take over town services like police and fire.
Academics
Edgemont is a highly-ranked school with an academic curriculum that includes many honors and Advanced Placement courses. Its teachers strive to teach in a way that encourages creativity and collaboration and fosters an interest in learning in students. They also aim to cultivate caring, globally aware, well-rounded children who are academically prepared for college.
A specialized curriculum known as Phaedrus is offered to juniors and seniors. This program occupies about half of a student’s academic school day and allows them to fulfill their science, math, foreign language and elective requirements in addition to their regular classes. The program also provides a good opportunity for students to interact with teachers outside of their core academic courses.
The student body is diverse and academically ambitious. The school is known for its rigorous college-prep curriculum, and it sends a high percentage of graduates to four-year colleges. Students participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including debate and Model UN, and they have the option of taking part in a yearly spring musical or sports pep band.
Students take Regents exams, which are aligned to New York state’s learning standards and provide parents, counselors, administrators, teachers and college admissions officers with easily understood achievement information. Passing scores on these exams satisfy the state’s testing requirements for a high school diploma.
Parents and students can help improve the quality of an Edgemont education by joining the PTA, which supports all facets of the school district. The community can also participate in the Edgemont Civic Council, which addresses town issues, such as zoning and planning, the town budget and taxes, and police and fire district matters. In addition, the Edgemont Scholarship Fund has aided graduating seniors with need-based financial aid for college since 1959.
Extracurricular Activities
Students at Edgemont Junior-Senior High School have the opportunity to participate in many extracurricular activities. These activities range from music to sports, and from academics to drama. These activities are designed to help students develop their unique talents and interests, as well as learn new skills. These opportunities allow students to gain valuable experience that will help them later in their careers.
The school offers a broad and rigorous curriculum, including honors courses and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The school’s curriculum is designed to challenge and prepare students for college, and nearly 97% of its graduates attend four-year colleges. It is one of the best high schools in Westchester County, and students regularly score above the national average on standardized tests.
Edgemont’s mission is to create learning that revolves around the individuality and uniqueness of every student. Creativity, collaboration, and communication are encouraged and fostered in a positive, supportive, and respectful learning environment. The school is committed to fostering life-long learners by encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among all members of the community.
Maddy is a sophomore at Edgemont high school. She loves to do anything art related, including beading jewelry, drawing, and painting. She has also taken digital design and street art classes. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with kids. She has been a counselor for multiple groups at a backyard day camp for over two years and enjoys working with all ages.
Aside from their academics, the students at Edgemont love to play sports. They have a variety of different sports teams, and they are very competitive. Some students even play for a travel team! They have a lot of fun participating in these activities, and they make great friends.
Fine Arts
Edgemont offers a wide range of fine arts classes. Students can take a photography course, learn to play the guitar or drums, and take part in the yearly musical. There is also a chorus, a chamber choir, and a wind ensemble. The school also has a well-established debate and Model UN team that regularly competes in tournaments.
Art classes are taught by Chris Coffin, who teaches Photography, Advanced Photography, Multi-Media, Advertising & Design, and Film Appreciation. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Providence College, majoring in Fine Arts and Western Civilizations, and a master’s degree from Pratt Institute, where he studied Sculpture. He believes that art education should be focused on Visual Literacy and not just the creation of artwork.
Adrianne Amorosa teaches 8th Grade, Studio 2D, Drawing and Painting, and Advanced Placement Art. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from SUNY New Paltz and an M.A. in Art Education from Manhattanville College. She is an experienced artist and a graphic designer, and enjoys working with her talented students at Edgemont Junior-Senior High School. She lives in Westchester County with her husband and three children. She and her family are thrilled that their children have the opportunity to attend this top-rated school.
Athletics
Students who attend Edgemont Junior-Senior High School can take part in a variety of sports. The school’s teams compete in boys swimming, girls and boys basketball, girls wrestling, boys indoor track and girls gymnastics. They also have the option of playing skiing and other winter sports. Athletes can also participate in band, orchestra, chorus and the sports pep bands.
The school’s mascot is a panther and the colors are blue and white. The school’s campus is modeled after a college campus and has five academic buildings.
Teachers at Edgemont are dedicated to helping students excel. Many of them go above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for their students, and the student body appreciates it.
As the 2022-23 school year begins, there is new leadership at Edgemont. Assistant Principal Sharon Flynn joined the staff in December of 2022, overseeing seventh through twelfth grades alongside Principal Kyle Hosier and MaryRose Joseph. Flynn has 26 years of experience as an educator.
Edgemont is a highly-ranked school that’s considered one of the best in the country. Its teachers and students come from a wide range of backgrounds and have many opportunities to express themselves. The school has an excellent music and theater program, and its debate and Model UN teams frequently win awards in regional and national tournaments.
The school has a strong culture of safety and has a zero tolerance policy for bullying and intimidation. Students are encouraged to speak out if they witness any incidents of bullying. The school also has a safe school program called DASA, which stands for Dignity for All Students Act. The program’s goal is to ensure that all students feel safe on school grounds, in a school vehicle or at school functions.
Library
The school’s library program serves to instill a love of reading, inspire life-long learning and promote information literacy. Students visit the library once a week with their class to check out materials and practice research skills.
In addition to offering books and magazines the library has a variety of educational programs for all ages. These include Book Club, Kid’s Time, Adult Coloring and the Summer Reading Program. Students are allowed to have 3 books checked out at a time. Once a book is overdue the student is responsible for bringing it back. The Library also accepts donations of craft supplies and books. New librarian Stacie Harter is looking forward to a successful year at the library.
As the only high school in a small village, Edgemont’s teachers, students, parents and community all work together to make it a top-notch institution. There is a strong focus on academics, and students are given plenty of room to pursue their interests, both inside and outside of the classroom.
There’s also a strong emphasis on safety. The district follows DASA (Dignity for All Students Act), which guarantees that any student who is on school grounds, a school bus or at a school function is safe from bullying, taunting and harassment.
This combination of factors has created a virtuous circle in which affluent, well-educated and competitive parents move to Edgemont solely for the schools, putting their time, energy and resources into enabling their children to excel academically and eventually gain admission to elite colleges and universities. This, in turn, attracts even more affluent and well-educated parents to Edgemont, ensuring that the cycle continues. Edgemont’s smaller size also means more bang for the buck, with a higher percentage of funds spent on instruction than the state average.
